Overview of Envelope Structure Systems for Factories and Industrial Buildings

Industrial factories are typically constructed using pre-engineered steel structures. In addition to the load-bearing steel frame, the building envelope system is an essential component. The envelope impacts aesthetics, functionality, and protection of machinery and equipment inside the factory. Depending on each project’s requirements and operational conditions, the most suitable envelope system should be selected and installed.

The envelope system plays a key role in factory buildings. It ensures safety and protection against external environmental impacts such as harsh weather. Additionally, a well-designed envelope helps reduce energy consumption through insulation, ventilation, and natural lighting. Aside from aesthetics, material selection and installation must consider climate conditions and appropriate accessories to avoid construction delays and ensure overall project quality.

The building envelope in steel structure construction typically includes roofing systems and wall systems. Below are the most commonly used envelope solutions in factory construction:

1. Factory Wall Systems

In factories, wall systems are commonly constructed using four main types:

  • Brick Walls: A traditional method for constructing factory walls, offering durability and good thermal insulation. However, it often requires longer construction time and higher labor costs.
  • Precast Reinforced Concrete Wall Panels: A modern and efficient wall construction method. These reinforced concrete panels are manufactured in factories and assembled on-site, offering high precision and excellent durability.

  • Panel Walls: Panel walls are a widely used option in factory construction. The panels may be made from steel, concrete, or composite materials. They are manufactured in industrial facilities and quickly assembled on-site. Panel wall systems offer high durability, good insulation, and strong aesthetic performance.

  • Metal Sheet Walls: Metal sheet walls are a popular and cost-effective choice for industrial factories. Made from coated steel sheets, they provide good weather resistance. Metal sheet walls feature simple design, high customization, and easy installation.

Metal sheet wall systems are widely used in industrial construction due to their fast installation and economic efficiency — and are frequently applied in steel structure projects executed by HGPT STEEL.

Selecting the appropriate wall type depends on the specific requirements of each project, including production conditions, insulation needs, durability, and aesthetic considerations.

2. Factory Roofing Systems:

  • Corrugated Metal Roof Sheets: A widely used roofing option known for cost efficiency, high durability, and strong weather resistance. Corrugated sheets are lightweight yet structurally rigid.
  • Metal Roofing Systems: Steel-supported metal roofing systems are favored in industrial environments due to their durability, ease of maintenance, and long-lasting performance against environmental factors.
  • Composite Insulated Roof Panels: Composite roof panels consist of an insulating core between two metal layers, providing excellent thermal insulation while being easy to install.

3. Doors, Windows, and Roof Ventilation Openings:

Positioning doors and windows correctly allows natural lighting, ventilation, and convenient access within the factory. Roof ventilation openings—such as skylights or roof vents—play an important role in improving air circulation and daylight utilization.
